This tree is an iconic symbol for the descendants of Jules and Victorine Bayonne, the inspiration for this entity, and the reason we, their heirs, owe our very existence. The few heirs who have had the privilege of visiting our ancestral property, invariably notice the imposing Taxodium distichum (bald cypress), that anchors the southeastern corner of the land.
I refer to this beautiful specimen, endearingly, as 'Willie,' as in Jules and Victorine's firstborn, my second great-uncle, who was born in 1879, some 145 years ago! Willie, with its 'fork divide,' at approximately 70 feet tall, and 65 inches in diameter, is likely to be only about 150 years old! Incidentally, the bald cypress that holds the title of the National Champion Bald Cypress is 96 feet tall, 56 feet in circumference makes, its home in the Cat Island Nation Wildlife Refuge, near St. Francisville, Louisiana, and it is estimated to be approximately 1,500 years old. The record for the oldest known living specimen, is at least 2,624 years old, found along the Black River in North Carolina, rendering it the oldest living tree in eastern North America!
The Bayonne family history and the story of the property that would be the home of Gardens at Bayonne is told in our archives at: (Check for updates soon)
An integral component of our earliest intentions, sometime around 2002, genealogy was considered a most critical element to build a tribute to our ancestors in forming Gardens at Bayonne.
As the appointed family historian, by the Sorrell Group of heirs, through Jules and Victorine's daughter, Florence, we began to 'piece' our family's history, largely from census records and court documents, discovering a rich legacy, which parallels the history of another Pointe Coupee Parish family, whose history is quite a bit contrasting, even to include the model for the subject of John Singer Sargent's most famous portrait Madame X.
But, I digress...
